A top government official recently stated that the Gujarat government is set to come up with industrial sheds at 12 places for the apparel industry. The state government stated that is estimates a requirement of 6.5 million sq ft for the development of the apparel segment. The apparel segment has immense potential to create jobs, especially in smaller towns, cities and for women and hence the government push for this sector.

Besides, an Expression of Interest was sought by the state government along with the Garment Manufacturers Association of India, from those industry players who were interested in setting up manufacturing units. People from outside the states as well as within responded to this and based on the responses it was concluded that the total space needed was 6.5 million sq ft for this project.

Shrimati D Thara, Vice-Chairman and Managing Director of Gujarat Industrial Development Corporation (GIDC) stated that there will be shed at 12 places and that most of the demand came from locations like Ankleshwar, Surat, Bhavnagar, Bardoli and Kathwada. Also, units will have to only bring their machines and start operations as these sheds will be multi-storey and on plug and use mode. These sheds will be available for micro, small, medium, and larges enterprises as well. Besides, Vapi, Naroda, Hansalpur, and Surendranagar are other places where this segment may grow.

Shrimati Thara added that until now they had only sought the Expression of Interests but now they would be asking for real applications that would give an idea of actual space needed. Mr Shailesh Patwari, President, GCCI stated that the apparel segment was non-hazardous and also favourable for women workers and entrepreneurs. He also added that women will benefit a lot from units on the outskirts of cities.
